Today our question is “How many Oceans Are There in the World? “. There are 5 major oceans in the world. If we contains the ancient oceans there are 19 oceans in the world.
What is Ocean
Ocean : The vast body of salt water that covers almost three fourths of the earth’s surface. Dictionary
Ocean : The whole body of salt water that covers nearly three fourths of the surface of the earth. Merriam
Ocean : An ocean is a major body of saline water, and a principal component of the hydrosphere. Approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface (~3.6×108 km2 ) is covered by ocean, a continuous body of water that is customarily divided into several principal oceans and smaller seas. More than half of this area is over 3,000 meters (9,800 ft) deep. Average oceanic salinity is around 35 parts per thousand (‰) (3.5%), and nearly all seawater has a salinity in the range of 30 to 38 ‰. Scientists estimate that 230,000 marine species are currently known, but the total could be up to 10 times that number. Wikipedia
There are five major oceans of the world,
- Pacific Ocean, which separates Asia and Australia from the Americas
- Atlantic Ocean, which separates the Americas from Eurasia and Africa
- Indian Ocean, which washes upon southern Asia and separates Africa and Australia
- Southern Ocean, which, unlike other oceans, has no landmass separating it from other oceans and is therefore sometimes subsumed as the southern portions of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, which encircles Antarctica and covers much of the Antarctic
- Arctic Ocean, sometimes considered a sea of the Atlantic, which covers much of the Arctic and washes upon northern North America and Eurasia
Ancient oceans include:
- Bridge River Ocean, the ocean between the ancient Insular Islands and North America.
- Iapetus Ocean, the southern hemisphere ocean between Baltic and Avalonia.
- Panthalassa, the vast world ocean that surrounded the Pangaea super-continent.
- Rheic Ocean
- Slide Mountain Ocean, the ocean between the ancient Intermontane Islands and North America.
- Tethys Ocean, the ocean between the ancient continents of Gondwana and Laurasia.
- Khanty Ocean, the ocean between Baltica and Siberia.
- Mirovia, the ocean that surrounded the Rodinia supercontinent.
- Paleo-Tethys Ocean, the ocean between Gondwana and the Hunic terranes.
- Poseidon Ocean
- Proto-Tethys Ocean
- Pan-African Ocean, the ocean that surrounded the Pannotia supercontinent.
- Superocean, the ocean that surrounds a global supercontinent.
- Ural Ocean, the ocean between Siberia and Baltica.

there are 4 ocean in the world
The Southern ocean does not exist, it is simply an opinion.
no there is 5 oceans
sorry there is 4 oceans southern is extra
Schools don’t teach that the southern ocean exists
Schools DO teach it John. If you look on Google Maps, it’s there. You have to keep in mind that PhD candidates have to contribute to the body of knowledge somehow, so they’re out there re-defining stuff all the time. It’s annoying that our “facts” change. When I was in undergrad, the Arctic was a “sea” and an “ocean” depending on the professor. A PhD discovered that the Southern Ocean has its own distinct patterns, and therefore should be defined as such. It’s annoying, but true. The textbooks are catching up so that your kids or grandkids will be taught that in school. Reminds me of Pluto on a T-shirt saying, “I was big enough for your mom.”
there are so many people
Logan knows he is proven correct; therefore, he is. THE SOUTHERN OCEAN IS BS.
I am a teacher in Chicago, and I am teaching about the Southern Ocean. Its in our text book. 🙂
Miss. Shi Town,
How many Oceans do you teach of?
Have just heard of the Southern Ocean i did not know of its existence
who cares if the southern ocean exists or not. Lets just enjoy LIFE
Lets just leave the oceans of the world in peace
According to NOAA (oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/howmanyoceans.html), three is one global ocean separated in to 5 geographical areas. The southern ocean was designated in 2000 and is internationally recognized.
Unlike this article, NOAA does not use wikipedia as a source. Wikipedia should never be used as a source.
